A new report discovers a reduction in television time among adults leads to burning more calories.

Although caloric intake did not change, the increased energy burn and replacement of a sedentary behavior with an active lifestyle bodes well for a sustainable long-term approach to combat obesity.

It was reported in Archives of Internal Medicine.

The average adult spends almost four hours near TV per day. Efforts to prevent and reduce obesity have focused on modifying diet and physical activity, but newer strategies have involved reducing sedentary behaviors such as TV watching.

Switching a sedentary behavior to an active endeavor may also improve sleep and indirectly combat obesity.

In the study, Jennifer J. Otten, Ph.D., R.D., and colleagues conducted a randomized controlled trial of 36 adults who had a body mass index between 25 and 50 and reported watching at least three hours of TV per day.

Between January and July 2008, all participants underwent a three-week observation period during which their daily TV time was assessed.

A group of 20 individuals was then randomly assigned to receive an electronic device that shut off the TV after they had reached a weekly limit of 50 percent of their previously measured TV viewing time. An additional 16 participants served as a control group.

As assessed by an armband measuring physical activity, those with the television lockout systems burned 119 more calories per day during the three-week period. In comparison, the control group burned 95 fewer calories per day during the intervention than during the observation period.

Energy balance—energy intake minus energy expenditure—was negative in the intervention group (by 244 calories per day) but positive in the control group (by 57 calories each day); however, this difference did not reach statistical significance.

“A recent task force report supports small behavior changes as a more sustainable, long-term approach to help address the obesity epidemic,” the authors write.

“It has been estimated that combined increases in energy expenditure and decreases in energy intake equaling only 100 calories per day could prevent the gradual weight gain observed in most of the population.”

Previous research with children has found that screen time reductions reduce calories consumed but do not increase calories burned, producing a similar change in energy balance but through a different mechanism, the authors note.

“This suggests that adults may differ from children in how they respond to reductions in sedentary behaviors,” they conclude.

“To our knowledge, this is the first study to measure the effects of a TV reduction intervention in adults. Reducing TV viewing should be further explored as a method to reduce and prevent obesity in adults.”

It is likely that you have probably heard of the “scale obsession.” Getting on the scale multiple times a day to find out how much weight you have lost can be really detrimental to your diet. In fact, some people can even end up gaining weight due to their obsession with the scale. How do you find out if you are losing weight, however? Here are some tips on how to measure weight loss progress without the help of a scale.

Rings

Wearing a ring every day will help you measure your weight loss progress without a scale. All that you need to do is see how loose or tight your ring fits. It is best to choose a ring that fits perfectly or is slightly tight to measure weight loss with. The looser that the ring becomes over time, the more that you will know that you are losing weight.

Jeans

Get a pair of jeans to measure your weight loss results with. The best thing that you can do is put a pair of jeans aside. This will ensure that jeans do not shrink to frequently being washed. It is also important to make sure that they are a pair of jeans which actually do fit. They should not be a pair of jeans that you cannot fit into yet. Put them on every week at the same time in order to find out loose they become. Needing a belt to hold up the pants will indicate your weight loss.

Bras

If you begin to lose weight, it is likely that you are going to loose it on all areas of your body. This means that even your breasts are going to become smaller over time. Once you begin to lose weight, you will probably begin to notice that your bras become too loose. Keep in mind that it is important for women to wear the right bra size, so if you do notice that your bras become too big, you will want to go shopping for new ones.

As you can see, there are alternative options to using a scale. Certain clothing pieces may be able to indicate how much weight you are or are not losing. They can also be much easier and safer for your diet than becoming obsessed with the numbers on the scale.

You simply cannot deceive your body! Everything that you eat or drink has an effect on your body. Have a piece of gum and all the calories found in that will be used by your body. Drink a glass of soda and your body will make use of everything that is contained in the glass.

Also keep in mind that you are your body. Well.. at least physically, there is nothing more to you than your body. So if your body is in pain, you will be too. If your body is in discomfort or unhealthy, you are the one who feels that all.

So in order to first lose weight and then control and manage it, sensible eating is perhaps the most important factor that you must take care of.

Start your diet with a food diary, record everything you eat, what you were doing at the time, and how you felt. That tells you about yourself, your temptation, the emotional states that encourage you to snack and may help you lose once you see how much you eat.

Instead of eating the forbidden piece of candy, brush your teeth. If you’re about to cheat, allow yourself a treat, then eat only half a bite and throw the other half away. When hunger hits, wait 10 minutes before eating and see if it passes.

Set attainable goals. Don’t say, “I want to lose 50 pounds in total.” Say, “I want to lose 10 pounds a month.” Get enough sleep but not too much. Try to avoid sugar. Highly sweetened foods tend to make you crave more.

Drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Water itself helps cut down on water retention because it acts as a diuretic. Taken before meals, it dulls the appetite by giving you that ‘full feeling.’

Diet with a buddy. Support groups are important, and caring people can help one another succeed. Start your own, even with just one other person.

Substitute activity for eating. When the cravings hit, go to the “Y” or health club if possible; or dust, or walk around the block. This is especially helpful if you eat out of anger.

If the pie on the counter is just too great a temptation and you don’t want to throw it away, freeze it. If you’re a late-night eater, have a carbohydrate, such as a slice of bread of a cracker, before bedtime to cut down on cravings. Keep an orange slice or a glass of water by your bed to quiet the hunger pangs that wake you up.

If you use food as a reward, establish a new reward system. Buy yourself a non-edible reward. Write down everything you eat including what you taste when you cook. If you monitor what you eat, you can’t go off your diet.

Weigh yourself once a week at the same time. Your weight fluctuates constantly and you can weigh more at night than you did in the morning, a downer if you stuck to your diet all day.

Make dining an event. Eat from your own special plate, on your own special placemat, and borrow the Japanese art of food arranging to make your meal, no matter how meager, look lovely. This is a trick that helps chronic over-eaters and bingers pay attention to their food instead of consuming it unconsciously.

Don’t shop when you’re hungry. You’ll only buy more fattening food. Avoid finger foods that are easy to eat in large amounts. Avoid consuming large quantities of fattening liquids, which are so easy to overdo. And this includes alcoholic beverages.

Keep plenty of crunchy foods like raw vegetables and air-popped fat-free popcorn on hand. They’re high in fiber, satisfying and filling. Leave something on your plate, even if you are a charter member of the Clean The Plate Club. It’s a good sign that you can stop eating when you want to, not just when your plate is empty.

Lose weight for yourself, not to please your husband, your parents or your friends. Make the kitchen off-limits at any time other than mealtime.

Always eat at the table, never in front of the TV set or with the radio on. Concentrate on eating every mouthful slowly and savoring each morsel. Chew everything from 10 to 20 times and count! Never skip meals.

If you are trying to lose weight, you may have noticed that some of your calorie cutting ideals haven’t worked, or maybe you’ve even gained weight in conjunction with them. At least this is what some experts are saying about certain calorie cutting habits of the common dieter. Eliza Zied R.D., a spokeswoman for the American Dietic Association states, “In their quest to lose weight, many women unknowingly sabotage themselves.” It seems the best of intentions are always the ones to end up in the worst of places.

But especially if you are eating like Arnold Schwarzenegger, but not perform like Arnold Schwarzenegger, you probably should cut calories. SO what is the right way to do it? First of all, eat your biggest meals earlier in the day rather than saving them up for dinner. It gives you more time to actually burn those calories, and it also works to suppress your hunger hormones, making it easier for you to actually stick to your caloric goals. If you eat proteins early in the morning, it will actually help you to stay up throughout the day.

In a second turn. That’s not a secret but eat as you need food instead of sticking to your few square meals per day. Snacks are not a bad thing, and it gives your body more of a chance to digest the calories you do take in before your body stores it and turns it into fat. All your meals will be smaller, and while you may be eating the same amount of calories, it gives you a better shot at weight loss.

Third, don’t assume that just because a food comes from your natural foods market or is advertised as “natural”, it is good for you. Natural markets of food sell bacon, high fat steaks, etc. just like any other store. And while it may be organic, that doesn’t mean it’s low fat or good for your health. Moreover, while natural and a plant, can account for 200 calories or more, which is significantly more than they are worth considering how it will affect your appetite. Instead, try grapes. They give you a significant amount more volume and less calories.

Finally, don’t eat only salad leading up to a significant event like a wedding, birthday, etc. It is significantly out of the ordinary, and you will most often crash or gain the weight back after the event, depending on when your body goes into starvation mode and starts holding on as tight as it can to any fat calories you take in.

There are quite a few other tips to leading a healthy lifestyle and a successful weight loss plan. But these are just a few of the major ones. Any diet plan should also be combined with an exercise or fitness plan for the most effective achievements.

Everyone knows that exercise is good for the body. But there is a growing awareness among researchers and fitness professionals that working out in groups can provide additional benefits for some.

A March 2008 study in the journal Birth by University of Taiwan researchers reported that Taiwanese women taking part in an exercise support program were less likely to have postpartum depression than those who did not. An Ohio State University study reported in the June 2007 Journal of Cancer Survivorship found that group exercise programs improved the physical and psychological well-being of women being treated for early-stage breast cancer.

These studies point to specific individuals — but anyone interested in working out with others can reap rewards.

It is difficult to ascertain whether the benefits of group exercise are derived from the activity or the social interaction, but experts agree that the support, variety and motivation a group provides can help improve physical and mental health and create lasting exercise routines.

“It is known that women tend to exercise more when they perceive high levels of social support in their lives,” says Cherilyn Hultquist, assistant professor in the department of health, physical education and sport science at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga. “Seeing familiar faces each class makes it more than a stale exercise environment. It becomes a community with common goals.”

Social interaction in group exercise settings can be a vehicle of encouragement and motivation for many, says Cedric Bryant, chief science officer for the American Council on Exercise, a nonprofit organization that promotes physical fitness and creates certification programs for fitness professionals. Group classes also create an atmosphere of accountability.

“Individuals are more inclined to come to the session because of social interaction, but also to put forth better effort because of the group dynamic that occurs with others — a positive competition, in a sense,” Bryant says.

Another advantage to working out with a group is the addition of an instructor.

“Many people enter a fitness facility and bounce around on equipment with little thought or direction about their workout,” Hultquist says. “This lack of balance can lead to injury, boredom or can limit results.” By having a trained professional lead a group, participants receive the full workout experience, including warm-up, workout, cool-down and stretching.

A group can also reduce the cost for individuals who are looking for a personal training experience but can’t afford one-on-one instruction.

Group workouts are no longer being confined to glassed-off boxes inside fitness clubs. Activities can be found for almost anyone looking for something to do — including new-mother stroller groups, boot camps at local parks, beach-front yoga and cha-cha classes at recreational centers.

Though traditional aerobics classes are still popular, new social activity groups like these are becoming increasingly in vogue, according to the 2008 Fitness Programs and Equipment Survey released by IDEA, an association of fitness professionals. Forty-three percent of member respondents said they offer social classes at their facilities, and 67% said they expect growth in this area.

Other stats from the survey: From 2000 to 2008, the number of IDEA members offering group strength training increased by 13%; overall, small-group class offerings (those with eight people or fewer) rose 14%. Eighty-three percent of facilities now offer personal training in groups of two, and 58% offer it in groups of three to five (an increase from 44% in 2007).

“Those are good numbers and are growing,” says Kathie Davis, IDEA’s executive director. There is no consumer clearinghouse for finding social activity groups or personal trainers willing to work with more than one person — but the Internet can be a helpful tool. Websites such as those for ACE or IDEA often have useful information on local groups. And just typing in a city name and a class such as “Stroller Strides” or “boot camp” should net a sizable list.

Individuals can also call their local health club or YMCA to find classes or a personal trainer. Beyond that, communities have running clubs that offer group training and many malls have walking programs for the public. Hultquist also recommends inquiring at local churches and recreation centers for community programs or at the workplace for lunch-hour classes.

Individuals looking to form their own group can network with their work colleagues, neighbors, family and friends to try and find matches with their interests, fitness levels and goals.

Regardless of where you find a group, do due diligence before joining. Make sure an independent trainer has proper credentials and that you are comfortable working with him or her. Bryant recommends that you check with the a href=”http://welcome.bbb.org/”>Better Business Bureau when considering a group that is part of an organization that’s unfamiliar to you.

And before signing up, and paying, for a group of new classes, Davis says to start with one session and see if you like the group and instructor or trainer — and feel that the workout is right for you.

Exercising in a group setting may not be a good fit for everyone. And those who choose it must remember the most important thing: to select an activity they enjoy.

“The goal is to acquire a new positive habit: exercise,” Bryant says. “Research clearly shows that if you find something you deem enjoyable, you will stick with it.”

Weight-loss drugs may sound like a dieter’s dream. But they aren’t a good choice for everyone who’s overweight. In fact, many doctors reserve them for people with weight-related health problems.

It’s best to lose weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise. But if you’re among those who struggle to lose weight and the excess weight has produced medical problems, weight-loss drugs may be able to help you.

Are you a candidate?

Prescription weight-loss drugs aren’t intended for people who just want to lose a few pounds for cosmetic reasons. They’re generally reserved for people who are unable to achieve or maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise, and often have health problems as a result.

Your doctor may consider you a candidate for medication treatment if these criteria apply:

Other methods of weight loss haven’t worked for you.

Your body mass index (BMI) is greater than 27 and you have medical complications of obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea.

Your BMI is greater than 30.

Common weight-loss drugs

Two prescription drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for long-term weight loss. These drugs work in different ways and cause different side effects.

Drug

Typical initial dosage

Estimated cost (30-day supply)

Common side effects

Sibutramine (Meridia)

5 to 15 milligrams (mg) once a day

$112 to $213

Increased blood pressure, headache, dry mouth, constipation and insomnia

Orlistat (Xenical)

120 mg three times a day

$132 to $380

Frequent oily bowel movements, diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain

Though not prescribed as often, several medications, such as phentermine (Adipex-P), are approved for short-term use. These drugs suppress appetite, but haven’t been the subject of many long-term studies. When used for a short time — generally less than 12 weeks — the medications usually lead to only temporary weight loss. Side effects of these drugs include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and lightheadedness.

Alli is the reduced-strength version of orlistat (Xenical). It’s approved for over-the-counter sale to overweight adults 18 years and older. Alli is meant to be used in conjunction with a low-calorie, low-fat diet and regular exercise. Alli can help you lose weight, but the weight loss likely won’t be great — perhaps just a few pounds more than you would lose with diet and exercise alone. Common side effects include diarrhea and gas with oily spotting. You can limit the side effects by eating a low-fat diet.

Effectiveness: Modest but can improve health

Combining weight-loss drugs with a low-calorie diet and regular exercise can help you lose more weight than can either drugs or lifestyle changes alone. Combining all three — medication, fewer calories and more activity — can help you lose anywhere from 5 percent to 10 percent of your total body weight within a year.

This may not seem like many pounds lost, but even modest weight loss has a significant benefit to your health. Losing just a small percentage of your weight can decrease:

Blood pressure

Blood triglyceride levels

Blood glucose levels

Insulin levels

Weight-loss drugs don’t replace the need for changes in your eating habits or activity level. They mainly improve your chances of achieving clinically significant weight loss — the amount of weight loss that has a positive impact on your health.

Drug safety: Still largely unknown

If you’re among those who can benefit from a weight-loss drug, you’ll likely need to take it indefinitely. When you stop drug treatment, however, much or all of the lost weight generally returns. The dilemma with taking the drugs indefinitely is that the most common weight-loss drugs are so new that possible long-term effects are unknown.

Sibutramine can cause a small increase in blood pressure that, for some people, may warrant discontinuing the drug. This drug isn’t recommended for people with uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, irregular heartbeat or a history of stroke.

Orlistat decreases the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins — for example, vitamins A, D and E. If you’re taking this drug, your doctor will recommend that you take a daily vitamin supplement to prevent potential nutrient deficiencies.

Factors to consider

You and your doctor need to carefully evaluate the potential benefits of taking a drug and weigh them against the possible long-term risks. Your doctor will also consider your health history, the possible side effects and the potential interaction of weight-loss drugs with other medications you’re taking.

Keep in mind that some health insurance plans don’t cover weight-loss prescription drugs. And some companies may require prior authorization before covering the expense. If you’re unsure of your prescription coverage, contact your health insurance provider.

These medications can help you with weight maintenance, especially if you continue exercising regularly. But keeping off the pounds once you’ve lost them is an ongoing concern. And despite your efforts, you might still regain the weight.

As you consider weight-loss drugs, make sure that you make every effort to exercise, change your eating habits and adjust any other lifestyle factors that have contributed to your excess weight. Weight-loss drugs aren’t the easy answer to weight loss, but they can be a useful tool to help you make the necessary diet and lifestyle changes.

Sometimes the strongest longings for food happen when you’re at your weakest point emotionally. Many people turn to food for comfort — consciously or unconsciously — when they’re facing a difficult problem or looking to keep themselves occupied.

But emotional eating — eating as a way to suppress or soothe negative emotions, such as stress, anger, anxiety, boredom, sadness and loneliness — can sabotage your weight-loss efforts. Often, emotional eating leads to eating too much food, especially high-calorie, sweet, salty and fatty foods.

The good news is that if you’re prone to emotional eating, you can take steps to regain control of your eating habits and get back on track with your weight-loss goals.

The connection between mood and food

Major life events — such as unemployment, health problems and divorce — and daily life hassles — such as a stressful work commute, bad weather and changes in your normal routine — can trigger emotions that lead to overeating. But why do negative emotions lead to overeating?

Some foods may have seemingly addictive qualities. For example, when you eat enticing foods, such as chocolate, your body releases trace amounts of mood- and satisfaction-elevating hormones. That “reward” may reinforce a preference for foods that are most closely associated with specific feelings. Related to this is the simple fact that the pleasure of eating offsets negative emotions.

Food can also be a distraction. If you’re worried about an upcoming event or rethinking an earlier conflict, eating comfort foods may distract you. But the distraction is only temporary. While you’re eating, your thoughts focus on the pleasant taste of your comfort food. Unfortunately, when you’re done overeating, your attention returns to your worries, and you may now bear the additional burden of guilt about overeating.

How to regain control of your eating habits

Though strong emotions can trigger cravings for food, you can take steps to control those cravings. To help stop emotional eating, try these suggestions:

Learn to recognize true hunger. Is your hunger physical or emotional? If you ate just a few hours ago and don’t have a rumbling stomach, you’re probably not really hungry. Give the craving a few minutes to pass.

Know your triggers. For the next several days, write down what you eat, how much you eat, when you eat, how you’re feeling when you eat and how hungry you are. Over time, you may see patterns emerge that reveal negative eating patterns and triggers to avoid.

Look elsewhere for comfort. Instead of unwrapping a candy bar, take a walk, treat yourself to a movie, listen to music, read or call a friend. If you think that stress relating to a particular event is nudging you toward the refrigerator, try talking to someone about it to distract yourself. Plan enjoyable events for yourself.

Don’t keep unhealthy foods around. Avoid having an abundance of high-calorie comfort foods in the house. If you feel hungry or blue, postpone the shopping trip for a few hours so that these feelings don’t influence your decisions at the store.

Snack healthy. If you feel the urge to eat between meals, choose a low-fat, low-calorie food, such as fresh fruit, vegetables with fat-free dip or unbuttered popcorn. Or test low-fat, lower calorie versions of your favorite foods to see if they satisfy your craving.

Eat a balanced diet. If you’re not getting enough calories to meet your energy needs, you may be more likely to give in to emotional eating. Try to eat at fairly regular times and don’t skip breakfast. Include foods from the basic groups in your meals. Emphasize whole grains, vegetables and fruits, as well as low-fat dairy products and lean protein sources. When you fill up on the basics, you’re more likely to feel fuller, longer.

Exercise regularly and get adequate rest. Your mood is more manageable and your body can more effectively fight stress when it’s fit and well rested.

If you give in to emotional eating, forgive yourself and start fresh the next day. Try to learn from the experience, and make a plan for how you can prevent it in the future. Focus on the positive changes you’re making in your eating habits and give yourself credit for making changes that ensure better health.

Here’s a look at some non-prescription weight-loss pills and what they will and won’t do for you.

Popular weight-loss pills

A number of weight-loss pills are available at your local drugstore, supermarket or health food store. Even more options are available online. Most haven’t been proved safe and effective, and some are downright dangerous.

In addition to these herbal and dietary supplements, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Alli — a reduced-strength over-the-counter (nonprescription) version of orlistat, a prescription weight-loss medication for adults age 18 and older. Alli promotes weight loss by decreasing absorption of fat by the intestines. The capsules are taken with meals, up to three times a day.

Alli sounds like a dieter’s dream, but there are no shortcuts to permanent weight loss. Alli is intended to be used only with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and regular exercise. Side effects, such as diarrhea and gas with oily spotting, can be significant if you don’t reduce the amount of fat in your diet.

The pitfalls of pills

Dietary supplements and weight-loss aids aren’t subject to the same rigorous standards as are prescription drugs or medications sold over-the-counter. Thus, they can be marketed with limited proof of effectiveness or safety. Vendors can make health claims about products based on their own review and interpretation of studies without the authorization of the FDA. However, the FDA can pull a product off the market if it’s proved dangerous.

For the consumer, it’s hard to know what you’re getting, or even if the list of ingredients matches what’s in the bottle. Many weight-loss pills contain a cocktail of ingredients — some with more than 20 herbs, botanicals, vitamins, minerals or other add-ons, such as caffeine or laxatives. How these ingredients interact individually and collectively with your body is largely unknown. And using them can be a risky venture, especially if you’re taking other medications.

Your own scrutiny and curiosity are your best protection. Read labels closely and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about any dietary supplements you’re taking or considering taking.

No quick fix

There’s no magic bullet for losing weight. The most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is through lifestyle changes: Eat healthy, low-calorie foods, watch portion sizes, and engage in regular physical activity. It’s certainly no magic pill, but it works.

Keep in mind that even if you take a weight-loss pill, you still have to eat fewer calories than your body uses in order to lose weight. Even if these products were to help you lose weight initially, you’d have to continue taking them for the weight to stay off, which may not be practical or safe.

If you’re concerned about your weight or have a condition that’s exacerbated by extra pounds, talk to your doctor. Whether you have 10 pounds or 100 pounds to lose, you need to eat a healthy diet based on a variety of foods and burn calories through physical activity. Time has shown that there truly are no easy solutions to losing weight. And over-the-counter weight-loss pills could cause more harm than good.
